He Bends

I recently had lunch with a friend who has a beautiful crown of white hair, which I love. As we were walking into the eatery I couldn’t resist reaching out to gently stroke the back of her head feeling the softness of her hair. It was just so beautiful! As soon as I did that something happened! She recalled a moment from the distant past which she hadn’t thought of for a very long time.

As she told it: A missionary from Africa was visiting their home when her children were very young. As she visited with this man of God her son, who had been watching them from a distant piped up and asked a very childlike question of this visiting guest. He asked, “May I touch your hair?”

As a woman of color, I couldn’t help but smile inside as she retold that part of her story, as very often when my children were younger their young Caucasian friends would ask similar questions, purely from their own natural curiosity. Children are always watching and seeing. So what they would sometimes notice was the distinct difference in the color and texture of hair. Thus was the case in the eyes of this young boy as he sat observing this dark-skinned man sitting and talking with his mother.Anyway, the missionary, who’s name was Festo Kivengere, head full of tight coarse hair, responded to this child’s simple request by bowing his head low and permitted him to touch his hair. How cool is that?

As my friend shared this memory I could see it moved her to consider such an act of humility.

Later on she sent me a message. She’d gone on the internet and Googled(r) his name. What she learned that she didn’t know at the time is this humble man, who’d sat in her living room was now deceased and that he’d been referred to by many as the Billy Graham of Africa. Sweet!!

Dear ones, as children; daughters of the Most High we are blessed to have that same access to our Father as this little boy had in touching the head of this godly man. He bent low and let a little boy touch his hair. Psalm 116:2 says, “Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!”1

I can’t begin to express the emotion that floods my soul as I write this Victory Call.

Sisters, in our deepest pit, at our highest heights, Abba Father is a breath away and there is no sorrow we cannot express, nor joy that we will rejoice in that He is not near enough to incline His ear; to bend down and listen.”

Amazing love!! HOW CAN IT BE?!

Love and Joy

Spring has finally arrived and we are fast approaching the 2013 Family Freedom Walk on Saturday, May 11th.  Last year the Lord brought in over $61,000 which absolutely stunned us.  We would like to invite you to be a part of what God does this year through the walk.  If you can join us that day, call today to register and start getting sponsors (732.350.1187). If you can’t walk with us, please consider being a sponsor.  All the net proceeds go to support the Addiction Recovery Ministries to help restore lives, marriages and families from the devastation of addiction.

This year our staff is having a friendly competition between the men and the women so it would be great if all our Victory Call readers would sponsor the women’s team for $25.00 but even $5 or $10 will make a difference. This link will take you directly to our webpage if you would give on-line.   Family Freedom Walk Support  or if you prefer you may mail a check to America’s Keswick 601 Route 530 Whiting, NJ 08759 in either case please designate your gift to FFW: Women’s team.

Thank you so much for your support. We appreciate you.

… for the joy that was set before Him [He] endured the cross… (Hebrews 12:2)

There is a significant connection between love and joy. The Scripture tells us that God so loved those who would come to believe that He sent His Son to die in our place.  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23 KJV).
Christ explained the connection between this love of the Father and our joy as believers. As the Father hath loved Me, so have I loved you… These things have I spoken unto you, that My joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full (John 15:9, 11 KJV).  Apparently, it is only when we grasp how loved we are, totally and unconditionally, that we can then walk in joy.
Christ says He wants His joy to remain in us. What is Christ’s joy? We find that answer in Hebrews 12:2. Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross….  You and I and all believers are Christ’s joy.  He loved us and therefore He experienced joy in saving us to an eternal love relationship with Him!
In His prayer to the Father, Christ reiterates this connection of love and joy.  Now I am coming to you. I have told them [the disciples] many things while I was with them … so they would be filled with my joy (John 17:13 NLT).  Jesus had clearly told the disciples that He loved them as much as the Father loved Him, the Son!  Again, it is in the anointed truth of Christ’s unconditional love for us that we can experience joy.
The Holy Spirit’s work in us also reveals the connection between love and joy.  The Apostle Paul tells us that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith… (Galatians 5:22 KJV).  Notice that the word fruit is singular.  There are not fruits of the Spirit.  Rather, the Spirit produces a singular fruit, the Fruit of the Vine!  Christ is being formed in us.  The manifestation of the character of God is being produced in us.  And love is first in the identification of Christ’s presence. And we know that God is love (1 John 4:8 KJV).
The very next identifying factor of the Lord’s character manifested by the Spirit is joy. And joy flows out of love!
And, finally, the Lord is the Initiator of Love and the Sole Source of Authentic Love. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us… (1 John 4:10a KJV).

Open our eyes, Lord, to see that Your love is unconditional and nothing can separate us from Your love. Thus, we can walk in joy (Romans 8:39).

God-Centered

“For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, ‘For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.'” Romans 9:17

Lord, when will I (we) really start to understand in a life-changing, significant way that life is about
YOU
YOUR PLANS
YOUR PURPOSE
YOUR GLORY

Not about
ME
MY PLANS
MY PURPOSE
MY GLORY?

Lord, may my life proclaim You, the One True God – with and without words.  Lord, may we, collectively as sisters, proclaim Your name in all the earth.

Blessings,
Diane

You and I can make hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of decisions each day. Some are made with very little or no thought at all. Others take serious consideration. In Daniel 1-2, during a very difficult time and under very difficult circumstances, we read about Daniel and his three friends making godly decisions. Daniel 1:8 reveals that Daniel makes some decisions that could have cost him his very life. Few of us are needing to make a decision of this magnitude. Regardless, it is important to note the basis on which decisions should be made. After reading these chapters I then read the following in Unfashionable by Tullian Tchividjian, page 34

“We all let factors that are external (outside advice) or internal (past experience or prejudices) play a role when we decide what job to take, how to parent our kids, or what to do with our money. We all draw on something when deciding how to live and what choices to make. The question is, to what are you looking for guidance? What ultimate authority is informing you and influencing your choices and conclusions?

We may think there’s quite a range of possible answers for such a question, but they actually boil down to two: we’re being guided either by the wisdom of this world or by the wisdom of God. It’s that simple.

We’re told it’s far more fashionable to be our own guide, to develop our own standards, to operate according to our own rules, and to come to our own conclusions. This is pounded into our lives relentlessly (and seductively) through Madison Avenue marketing. It’s the mantra of Hollywood’s “beautiful people.” The most current “wisdom” seems much more up-to-date, relevant, and reliable than the seemingly outdated wisdom revealed by God.

Yet Christians have always been called by God to be people of the Book, regardless of how outmoded that rule might seem to others. The Bible is God’s manual on how to live unfashionably. We’re to be constantly asking “What does the Bible say?” and then living and choosing accordingly.”

Praying we will all have Daniel courage today and in the days to come as we make decisions!

“If it is difficult for you to identify and confess your wrongs, there are two things you can do. First, ask God to help you see your sin clearly and repent of it, regardless of what others may do (Ps. 129:23-24). Then prayerfully study His Word and ask Him to show you where your ways have not lined up with His ways (Heb. 4:12). Second, ask a spiritually mature friend to counsel and correct you (Prov. 12:15; 19:20). The older I get, the less I trust myself to be objective when I am involved in a conflict. Time after time I have been blessed by asking a friend to candidly critique my role in a conflict. I have not always liked what my friends have said, but as I have humbled myself and submitted to their correction, I have always seen more clearly.”

Taken from  The Peacemaker: A Biblical Guide to Resolving Personal Conflict by Ken Sande, Updated Edition (Grand Rapids, Baker Books, 2003) p. 120.

Food for Thought
In Psalm 32, David talks about how hidden sin eats us up. “For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of the summer.”

Yet as we read on in the chapter, David identifies no less than seven mighty acts God will work on our behalf as we confess our sin. He begins with the stunning promise that “surely in the rush of great waters they shall not reach him” and ends with the assurance that “steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord”.

Are you struggling with private or unconfessed sin? Read Psalm 32 and see if you can identify all seven of the ways God promises to intercede on your behalf as you take the difficult step of acknowledging (even publicly, if appropriate) your wrongdoing. Then read 2 Timothy 2:21 and take comfort in the knowledge that God is seeking to cleanse you from your sin to use you for noble purposes ahead.

Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. (Ephesians 4:29 NASB)

Then there’s the last phrase, …so that it will give grace to those who hear. This is what the Lord used to really impact me that day many years ago concerning my speech and the use of my words.  And I’m often reminded of this verse again and cautioned.
As I read those words, the Holy Spirit gave me the mental picture of being in conversation with someone about another person, and not only using my words but also the inflection of my voice, the body language, the rolling of my eyes, and facial expression to get my point across.  Not only was I gossiping, but also slandering the person, and claiming that I was the one who was right in the situation.  I was convicted not only of these unwholesome words, but of the fact that they would not be edifying to the person I was speaking to or anyone else passing by who heard me speak; nor did they in any way express grace to every one of those people who observed my tone as well as my words.  Thus, tears came to my eyes and confession to my lips; repenting, I asked God’s forgiveness.
How easy it is to be deceived into not “watching our words,” then falling into sin by not using our words to bring glory and praise to the Lord.  Let us be diligent about honoring Him with every word that comes from our mouths, so that the motive and intent of our words might be pure and edifying to all who hear.
As we continue the practice of watching our words, I trust that the following Scriptures will be helpful:

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.
Matthew 12:34b (NIV) For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.
Psalm 141:3 (NIV) Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep a watch over the door of my lips.
Proverbs 13:3 (NIV) He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.
Proverbs 21:23 (NIV) He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.
Psalm 19:14 (NIV) May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock, and my Redeemer.

Let’s pray that others will be drawn to the Lord by the expression of the fruit of His Spirit evidenced in our lives as we are prayerfully “watching our words.”

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.  (Galatians 5:22-23 NIV)

Watching Our Words

Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. (Ephesians 4:29 NASB)

Next let’s consider the words, …only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment…
How often are my words those that “edify” or build up others? It’s so easy to criticize, be judgmental, or speak with a negative attitude; to gossip or discourage someone by what I say. Those words would then be considered to be “unwholesome,” “corrupt,” and even “rotten.”  But here we are instructed to be using our words for the good of those around us, to build them up in the Lord, edifying them according to the need of the moment. As we observe those we meet along the way each day, how can this Scripture be applied in our home, at our workplace, in the grocery store, at the post office, in our neighborhood, at the doctor’s office, or while shopping at the mall?  I need to ask myself, “Am I aware of  ‘the need of the moment’ of those around me, or is my focus just on myself, and the things that I have to do?”
An encouraging word, an act of kindness, a smile, a word of affirmation can express the love, joy, and peace of the Lord to someone who may be having a difficult day.  The Lord has been teaching me to be resting in Him in the details of my life, trusting Him for His timing and direction moment by moment.  Perhaps this is so that I can observe “the needs of the moment” in the lives of those with whom I come in contact and share Jesus’ caring love with them.  Philippians 4:4-8 Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your graciousness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Don’t worry about anything, but in everything through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which surpasses every thought will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable – if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise – dwell on these things (HCSB).

Watching Our Words

Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. (Ephesians 4:29 NASB)

When I first became truly aware of the words in this verse, about twenty some years ago, it brought tears to my eyes.  Now, I wasn’t one to use “bad language,” swear words, or even a lot of “slang” words, but the Lord used something about this verse to speak to me in a very deep way that day.  I will address that more further along, but first some other issues about our words and the application of this verse. Other Scripture translations read “corrupt communication” (KJV), “corrupt word” (NKJV), “unwholesome talk” (NIV), “foul language” (HCSB).
Perhaps you are like me and never have considered your words to be “unwholesome,” “corrupt” or “rotten,” but how often are there some words we might use in place of those that we seek to never let pass over our lips.  Such as “darn,” “dang” or “drats,” “heck” or “gads,” “gees” or “fudge,” and others, expressed with the same intent.  They are a habitual response that tends to come out of our mouth when we are frustrated or irritated or angry. Perhaps there have been other times when we have muttered them under our breath, not really aloud for anyone to hear! I was convicted of this even more years ago by these verses from the book of James, chapter 3:9-10, addressing the use of the tongue: With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men…Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be  (NIV) .
Another thing that I’ve become more and more aware of in recent years is the use of God’s name by those in the Christian community in an exclamatory way: “God!” or “My, God!” or “Oh, my God!”  While teaching the Ten Commandments to my kindergarten class (also a number of years ago), and wanting to impress on them what was meant by, You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain…(Exodus 20:7a), we talked about how we would use God’s name “in vain.”  Understanding “in vain” to mean “misuse” or “for no reason,” we concluded that God’s name should not be used just casually or at anytime other than in praying to Him or praising Him. The Israelites considered God’s name too holy to even speak it. “Yahweh is the promised name of God. This name of God which (by Jewish tradition) is too holy to voice, is actually spelled “YHWH” without vowels….During the third century A.D., the Jewish people stopped saying this name in fear of contravening the commandment.  Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain.”1

Part 2

“For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Romans 8:38

I cannot tell you how many women I speak to that tell me they know God loves them but they just don’t feel it or that they believe God loves others but not them.  So please forgive me if I belabor this point.  Nothing, absolutely nothing can separate us from the love of God.

Death will not separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
Life will not separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

Angels will not separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
Rulers will not separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

Things present will not separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
Things to come will not separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

Powers will not separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
Height nor depth will not separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

Nothing in all creation will separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
Nothing, absolutely nothing will separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

Oh, sister in the LORD, hear His words to you today.  “I love you and nothing, absolutely nothing you can do or that happens to you that will change that, nothing!”

Be Blessed,
Diane
